Julie Røssland has been catapulted from the Sibelius Academy’s conducting class to guest conducting top orchestras in Scandinavia, Germany and London. Her debut with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra culminates in Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ‘Fate’ Symphony, a journey of self-discovery tempered by personal crises, with not a single dull moment along the way.
Recharged, an early work by this season’s composer-in-residence, pulses with youthful bravado in Sauli Zinovjev’s familiar style; this six-minute piece promises rhythmic inevitability and sudden twists throughout.
David Munk-Nielsen, winner of the most important Nordic piano competitions in recent years, leaves his mark on the concerto by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. This work, which inspired both Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, is the pinnacle of lyrical Romanticism and the first concerto that was ever recorded.
