Violinist and conductor Malin Broman is known for her inventive programmes. This time, historical landmark works complement a Romantic rarity and a modern favourite.
Fanny Mendelssohn’s talents and creativity were overshadowed by those of her brother, five years her junior. This rarely heard overture is filled with early Romantic passion in the style of Beethoven. In contrast to this is a violin concerto composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at the age of 19 – notable especially for its Adagio, which seems to have fallen straight from heaven.
The composition of Robert Schumann’s Second Symphony was attended by mental and physical pain and a ringing in his ears. This series of confrontations, depicting his inner turmoil, was Schumann’s response to his spiritual anguish – the symphony leaves no room for pessimism.
Restless Oceans by Anna Clyne, one of the most successful composers of our time, was premiered in 2019 at the World Economic Forum in Davos. This orchestral work, which has now been performed nearly a hundred times, gives a voice to silenced women in the spirit of a poem by Audre Lorde.
