Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is perhaps the most iconic piece of music in the world. In addition to its sheer scale, it makes an impression with its final choral movement, a paean to the brotherhood and eternal friendship of all peoples. In two hundred years, Beethoven’s Ninth has grown into a monument that is greater than itself: its melodies have accompanied the turning points of history, and now it heralds the opening of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra’s concert season.
Lahti-born Sauli Zinovjev has created a trademark musical style in which Romantic sonorities blend with the contemporary effects. Fade Out, a work commissioned by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and now receiving its world premiere performance, is the Zinovjev we know, but with even greater intensity. There will be momentum, danger and roller-coaster twists and turns. The risk of derailment should not be underestimated.
