Romeo and Juliet was the first work composed by Sergei Prokofiev on his return to the Soviet Union from his travels abroad. After some initial setbacks, the work quickly found its way into the hearts of contemporary listeners. Its romantic harmonies, haunting melodies and visceral rhythms continue to impress, and deservedly keep Prokofiev among the most beloved composers of the 20th century. This concert includes a suite from the ballet, compiled by conductor Tianyi Lu, in which one hit follows another.
Arabella Steinbacher, a frequent guest with practically all of the world’s top orchestras, now makes her debut in Lahti. Steinbacher will play Johannes Brahms’s Violin Concerto, which she has made her signature piece; critics have praised her interpretation as incomparable, and her tone as brilliant, pure and luminous.
