Three composers, three pioneers of Romanticism: the works performed this evening laid the foundations for a style that would shape the entire century.
Robert Schumann made a conscious shift away from Beethoven’s symphonic form, which emphasized monumentality. In his Third Symphony (1850), Schumann paints idealistic landscapes of the Rhine Valley against a backdrop of a fast-flowing undercurrent.
Louise Farrenc’s overtures were composed in 1834 as independent concert pieces. Overture No. 2, bursting with tragic emotion, is a fine example of orchestration, and Hector Berlioz himself drew upon its innovations. Felix Mendelssohn developed the concerto form, freeing it from the strictures of the classical era. His ethereally beautiful Concerto in E minor also restored the violin to its place of prominence after a hiatus of several decades. Andrea Cicalese, a rapidly rising star among violinists, is now set to win over the audience at Lahti’s Sibelius Hall!
